Jerome is a town in the Black Hills of Yavapai County in the U.S. state of Arizona. Founded in the late 19th century on Cleopatra Hill overlooking the Verde Valley, Jerome is located more than 5,000 feet (1,500 m) above sea level. It is about 100 miles (160 km) north of Phoenix along State Route 89A between Sedona and Prescott. Supported in its heyday by rich copper mines, it was home to more than 10,000 people in the 1920s. As of the 2010 census, its population was 444. It is now known for its tourist attractions, such as its “ghost town” status and local wineries. There is a lot to see and do even being a ghost town. There are wonderful eateries and dozens of neat shops to browse through.

Gold King Mine 1000 Perkinsville Rd. Jerome https://goldkingmineghosttown.com
We invite you to visit the Gold King Mine and Ghost Town while visiting Jerome Arizona. The history here is rich and there are stories to be told. It all began in 1890 . . . It’s a really cool place to visit! Admission is $12
When they dug a 1270 foot mine shaft, (you can still visit it today) searching for copper, they struck GOLD! The location was only 1 mile north of the mining town, Jerome, but they became their own mining camp called “Haynes”. In 1901, the population was 30! They even had their own post office from 1908 – 1922.
Or course, the gold ran out and the mine was closed. Years later, 91 years later to be exact, the area was rediscovered by Terry & Don Robertson. The year was 1981 and Dons’ dream was to share with the world some of the most unique and important icons of the industrial revolution.
Jerome Grand Hotel 200 Hill St, Jerome, AZ 86331 https://jeromegrandhotel.net/
Before the Jerome Grand Hotel was the Jerome Grand Hotel, it was the United Verde Hospital. And that’s where this story begins. It was 1888 and—in pursuit of copper, gold, silver, and manganese—the expanding United Verde Copper Company came to the booming mining town of Jerome, Arizona.
In its heyday in the early 1900s, Jerome was the third largest town in the state. Tucked into a steep hillside overlooking the Verde Valley, its narrow streets were brimming with 37 saloons, 13 bordellos, and a meager four churches—earning itself the title of the Wickedest City in the West. They needed a hospital to support all that drinking and sinful living, so the mining company built the United Verde Hospital—in 1917, and again in 1926 after a mine blast damaged the original. A series of ill-fated events at this site would almost lead one to call it cursed.
